Ideal Candidates for Laser Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is cosmetic surgery on the eyelids. Its purpose is to remove excess skin around the eyes. Laser blepharoplasty involves a doctor using a laser beam or C02 laser to make small incisions around the person's eyes in order to remove the excess fatty tissue, muscle, or skin that cause eyelids to have a droopy or puffy appearance.
Droopy or puffy upper eyelids and bags under the eyes are not only a cosmetic concern. In some cases, they interfere with a person's ability to see. Laser blepharoplasty is a procedure that can help people see better and also improve their appearance at the same time. The advantage of using a laser is that it reduces the potential for bleeding and post-operative infections. Also, the recovery time is much shorter. Not every patient is an ideal candidate. Ideal candidates-
- Are eighteen years old or older and in good physical and mental condition.
- Have no history of or high risk for diseases or conditions of the eye, such as glaucoma, detached retina, or dry eye. Patients with history of heart conditions or high blood pressure are not good candidates.
- Have a realistic understanding of what blepharoplasty can do. Patients who expect too much from the procedure are not considered ideal. The procedure can only reduce puffiness or bagginess around the eyes. It will not erase wrinkles or otherwise "lift" the patient's face. The procedure also does not affect the person's facial structure in any way.
- Must be able to provide after-surgery care, such as applying compresses to decrease swelling, a condition that often occurs after surgery.
- Understand the risks that accompany the procedure. They include swelling, discoloration, scarring, and bruising.
